The Need

Renovation and expansion of Maple Grove Community Center will address critical updates to provide the services and amenities that will best serve our growing population in the years ahead.

After 26 years, the Maple Grove Community Center continues to bring our community together and contribute to the strong quality of life that residents enjoy today. Guests visit the Community Center for sporting events, conferences, expos and recreation – all of which helps support our local economy.

Since the Community Center opened in 1997, the population of the northwest region has surged to more than 230,000 residents. Over the past decade, Maple Grove’s population has increased by 18%, more than twice the average for the state of Minnesota (7.6%).

As the city’s population grows and diversifies, demand has been building for the Community Center to support a wider range of services and programs.

When asked to provide feedback, community members offered suggestions such as additional swimming pools, fitness facilities, more ice time, expanded event and banquet space, and more space for senior programs and the arts.

Why make repairs and upgrades now?

Over the years, the Community Center has been well maintained. However, given its age and high level of use, infrastructure updates and repairs are needed to modernize the center and ensure that it can serve the region’s growing population for many years to come. This includes improving energy efficiency (which saves money), increasing sustainability, and installing more effective temperature controls.

Supporting a wide range of programs and activities

The Maple Grove Community Center is the go-to source for many activities and classes for residents, from pickleball, basketball, and volleyball to painting, writing, and woodcarving. The Maple Maze offers an indoor playground for children. For seniors and their loved ones, the Community Center hosts clubs, meetings, a caregiver support group, and classes on a variety of topics, such as retirement and technology assistance.

In the Community Center’s meeting and banquet rooms, Maple Grove residents gather for conferences, weddings, baby showers, seminars and birthday parties. The Grove Cove Aquatic Center offers lap and leisure pools with activities, such as swimming lessons, aerobics, and lifeguard training. At the teen center, 12- to 18-year-olds can hang out with friends, listen to music, and play games in a welcoming environment.

At the ice arena, residents enjoy freestyle skating, figure skating, and hockey. The Osseo Maple Grove Hockey Association (OMGHA) is the second largest youth hockey association in the country, with about 1,150 skaters and 68 teams. In addition, the Maple Grove Skating School is the state’s largest skating school and the 27th largest in the country as of 2012, with over 1,500 participants from 17 communities. The arena is home to the Maple Grove Crimson.

The Parks and Recreation Department also offers many off-site activities for children and adults, including dance, art, yoga, tai chi, and strength training. For more information on the Community Center’s offerings, see the activity guide.
